Sixty
nine years ago on May 9, 1937 a
boy was born to Beulah and Forrest Slabaugh. The place
was a medium sized farm in northern Indiana. After a
childhood of hunting and fishing he went off to
college at Purdue University. It wasn't long before
he relized he wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
After four years he had enough ROTC credits to become
an officer in the army. In 1960 he was assigned to
serve at Dugway Proving Grounds, eighty miles out of
Salt Lake City, Utah. In the spring of 1963 he left
the service to seek his fortune. His forture was
good for a while, but other people always swindled
him. Finally he took a job in a coal mine near Price,
Utah. When the mine closed he came to Las Vegas for
the winters and started doing nature projects in the
summer. Several years ago he decided it would be a
big help to put his projects on the internet. So
now the summers are spent working on projects and the
winters are spent working on the website. The website
is thene.org, which is, "The Nature Experience". Check
it out. There are projects in Colorado, New Mexico,
Indiana, and Wisconsin. Some of the pictures have
been furnished by other nature people. I try to
always give credit to the person furnishing the
photo. Last year about thirty days were spent working
hard labor for a nature organization and they didn't
even say thanks when it was done. Thats about the way
nature organizations work. You are just a volunteer,
and when you don't show up anymore they just look for
someone else. Lots of times they don't really care if
anything is really accomplished. They just want to say
it was done. It is my intention to do things the way
they should be done.
